Yes. Air sealing before adding insulation helps stop conditioned air from leaking into the attic and helps the new insulation perform as intended. ENERGY STAR recommends sealing attic air leaks before adding more insulation whenever possible.
How do I know if my attic is under-insulated?
Common signs include high energy bills, rooms that stay too hot or too cold, insulation below the top of the floor joists, dusty drafts, and an HVAC system that runs too often. A quick attic inspection can show the current depth, condition, and likely R-value.
Can insulation be added over old insulation?
